Antonio Vivaldi wrote at least three Gloria compositions, settings of the hymn Gloria in excelsis Deo, with words probably dating back to the 4th century. The Gloria RV 589, probably written in 1715 is a familiar and popular piece among Vivaldi's sacred works.
The texts of the first two sections of Vivaldi’s Gloria are the words of the angels in their announcement of Christ’s birth, words that are sung repeatedly in Christmas music, either in Latin or English.
Gloria in excelsis Deo. Glory to God in the highest.
Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. And on earth peace to men of good will.
Bob Chilcott has always loved jazz. During his composing career he worked and performed with artists such as George Shearing, Richard Rodney Bennett, John Dankworth and Art Farmer. These jazz influences have had a major impact on the music he composes and come to the fore in A Little Jazz Mass, a setting of the Latin Missa brevis.
A Little Jazz Mass is one of Chilcott's most celebrated and popular choral works to date, and has received countless performances across the world.
