About Us

The Hardynge Choir started as an evening class, but now provides a challenging outlet for singers wishing to perform mostly the mainstream Choral Society repertoire. At least four concerts are given each year, usually with professional orchestras and soloists.

Hardynge Choir celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2006, and Catherine Beddison joined as Director of Music at the beginning of 2007.

Although unusual among successful large choirs, there are no formal individual auditions for entry or ongoing membership. We believe that singing should be taken seriously and worked at hard, but above all it should be fun and open to as many people as possible.  The Hardynge Choir is proud of its more inclusive approach to membership, which goes back many years, and regards it as a considerable strength.  Currently the choir has 70 to 80 members.

For membership details please telephone Stella Hadjiphanis, Membership Secretary, on 01727 837207, or email membership@hardyngechoir.org.

St Albans St Cecilia Festival Society

Hardynge Choir has been a member of the St Albans St Cecilia Festival Society for many years.  The Festival Society was formed in 1955  to celebrate St Cecilia’s Day with a performance by three St Albans’ music societies of Handel's Messiah. This initial event has been followed by an increasingly ambitious series of biennial concerts in St Albans Abbey.
